Mock this!
Introduction to "Bouffon"
An exploration of the physicality
of the satirical and farcical worlds of “Bouffons”
1 week intensive led by Paola Coletto
December 3rd through December 7th - 9.00am to 1pm
Monday through Friday

Who are they? Where do they come from? What do they have to say?
Rooted in the subversive nature of satyrs from ancient Greek mythology and the biting social parody of Roman farce, “bouffons” are supreme players in the art of mocking. A merry gang of rabble-rousers, they mock all human convention, provoking amplified opposition to urbanity, decorum, and civilization itself—always pushing the limits to the extreme. Their mission is to reveal the truth about humanity, of what is hidden, what lies underneath –on the other side– to unmask the collective games that lie behind events.

Exploration into “bouffons” is a theatrical form that uses ‘body masking’ to transform performers into grotesque characters who satirize society. ‘Grotesque’ comes from the Greek word cryptos = hidden.
The bouffon tribe provides a safe place for the artist to fully invest, let go and loosen up helping them to truly release their hidden skills while allowing them to flourish creatively and artistically. Coursework will instigate the research and development of the bouffon corporal-mask, searching for its defining characteristics, examining its relationship to other forms, and pondering the limits of its capabilities.
